Many thanks to Fiona, Frances, Laura, and Susan for the advice, offers of hardware, and (above all!) sympathy.
At the moment, I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of a Macintosh Plus, "guaranteed not to arrive DOA." And after I bought this online, a friend told me about a local store that carries old Macs--they have several that they'd love to get rid of at prices well under $100--if the Mac Plus takes too long arriving, or if it goes belly-up, I can always go round there and find one that can read my disks.
So I'm feeling optimistic about the feasibility of getting the data converted and getting rid of the obsolete hardware before Christmas. That's important, because I hope to have the whole family visiting then, and I shudder to think what the three-year-old nephews would do if we turned them loose with the hardware. (At left: the vintage hardware depot, or why Donna won't be hosting any formal dinners for a few weeks. There's more hardware I couldn't fit into this photo.)
If that fails try a Apple IIGS emulator
(on your new mac or PC):

There are some geeks out there who write code to emulate just about every old OS.
I can't help much beyound that. I haven't used a IIE or IIc in donkeys years.
Good luck.
